I am so totally amazed! These plants somehow survive sub freezing condition this past week!
A little history here: We live in a fairly mild maritime zone 7 area but we do get some freezing and even snow, but usually not until late January/Febuary. I planted this one raised bed of salad winter greens in early September and hoped to have fresh salad stuff for Christmas dinner with my daughter and grandson. At least, that was my wish. Then this past week we got hit with a long blast of Artic air and our temperatures dropped into the teens for both day and night for about a week.
My little fish pond and half barrel froze over with ice probably about four inches deep I think. I lost all my plants in my unheated greenhouse. These plants however were outside in a raised bed and only covered with two flannel backed plastic table clothes. I fully expected to pull back the cover today after the warming rains came in last night, and find frozen black dead produce. OMG, I can't believe the survival rate. Yes, there is damage due to freezing but tender lettuces look like they will bounce back and the broccolis look basically unscathed! Plants do want to live!!!
So the Pacific rains are here again but coming from the south, so we will stay above freezing for the rest of week. Family arrives on Monday so I think I will be able to harvest these for my holiday dinner after all! The plants on the outside of the bed look pretty damaged, maybe beyond comeback, so that will be the loss of my swiss chard and bok choy. Ah well, I was only hoping to make to next week.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Thanks. It was really a very informative post.
