A few hours one brisk autumn afternoon can yield months of colorful excitement in your yard or garden next spring. You can plant bulbs just about anywhere in your garden - so long as the soil drains well. Got sandy soil? Bulbs should be planted deeper in sandy soils than in clay soils.
Prepare the planting bed by digging the soil so it's loose and workable. Bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground is cool. Bulbs will root best in cool soil and once rooted undergo natural changes that keep them from freezing. Plant big bulbs a minimum of 8-inches deep and small bulbs about 5-inches. A general rule of thumb is to plant your bulbs 3 times the length of the bulb.
Be sure to throw in a handful of bonemeal before dropping in your bulb. Bonemeal is high in phosphorus which bulbs need to grow up healthy and strong!
Even if you don't have enough bulbs for a big bed, small clusters can make a super spring show! I picked up this package of 12 pink bulbs for $4.00 and planted them in about 10 minutes. I just picked an empty spot in my garden and dug a hole about 1.5 ft x 1.5 foot x 9 in. deep. Next spring I will have a "hot spot" of gorgeous pink tulips! I can hardly wait.
Bulbs planted against the southern side of your house may bloom up to a week earlier than the same ones planted on the north side! Pictured above is a favorite of mine, Darwin American Beauty. This tulip and many others as well as daffodils are available through Virtual Seeds. Remember, planting time if from October through December depending on where you live in the U.S.
